GAF vs. Owens Corning vs. CertainTeed
If you've spent any time researching roof replacement, you've run into the Big Three: GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed. They dominate the asphalt shingle market, and for good reason — all three make genuinely good products.
But here's what most comparison articles won't tell you: the differences between these brands at the same product tier are smaller than the marketing suggests. A GAF Timberline HDZ, an Owens Corning Duration, and a CertainTeed Landmark are far more alike than they are different. They're all architectural shingles, they all carry lifetime limited warranties, they all have Class A fire ratings, and they'll all protect your home for 20-30 years when installed correctly.
That said, there are real differences — in wind performance, algae protection, nail technology, color options, and warranty structure. Those differences might matter a lot depending on where you live and what you care about. So let's break it down honestly, without pretending any of these brands is dramatically better or worse than the others.
Meet the Big Three
GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America with roughly 40% market share. Their Timberline HDZ is the single best-selling shingle in the country. They've been around since 1886, and their scale means you can find GAF products practically anywhere. Think of GAF as the Toyota of shingles — reliable, widely available, and a huge installed base that proves the product works.
Owens Corning is the pink fiberglass insulation company — that's the same Owens Corning. They bring serious materials science to their roofing line. Their Duration shingle is the flagship, and it's built around their patented SureNail Technology, which is a woven fabric strip in the nailing zone that provides dramatically better nail pull-through resistance. They're the engineering-focused option.
CertainTeed is owned by Saint-Gobain, a French multinational that's been making building materials since 1665 (not a typo). Their Landmark shingle is the heaviest of the three at about 230 pounds per square versus GAF's 210. They position themselves as the premium option and have the broadest designer and luxury shingle lineup. If aesthetics matter most to you, CertainTeed probably has the widest selection.
Wind Performance: Where It Matters Most
In Texas, Oklahoma, and the Southeast, wind performance isn't optional — it's the whole point. Here's how they stack up.
GAF Timberline HDZ is rated for 130 mph winds out of the box. But the real standout is their WindProven Limited Warranty — when installed with four qualifying GAF accessories (starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge caps, and either leak barrier or attic ventilation), you get a 15-year wind warranty with no maximum wind speed limit. That's industry-first territory. No other manufacturer offers unlimited wind speed coverage.
Owens Corning Duration is also rated at 130 mph. Their SureNail strip provides 2.5 times better nail pull-through resistance than standard shingles, which means the shingle physically holds onto the nails harder during wind events. The warranty can be upgraded to 130 mph with proper installation, but there's no unlimited option.
CertainTeed Landmark starts at 110 mph and can be pushed to 130 mph with special installation requirements. Their advantage is weight — at 230 lbs per square, they're the heaviest of the three, which gives them natural wind resistance through sheer mass.
Our take: For wind-prone areas like our service regions, GAF's WindProven warranty is a meaningful differentiator. But all three will handle the vast majority of storm events when installed correctly. The installation matters more than the brand.
Algae Resistance: A Bigger Deal Than You Think
Those black streaks you see running down older roofs? That's Gloeocapsa magma — a blue-green algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It doesn't damage the roof structurally, but it looks terrible and can reduce your home's resale value. In humid climates across the South and Southeast, it's practically inevitable on unprotected shingles.
All three manufacturers use copper-infused granules to fight algae. Copper slowly releases over time, creating a hostile environment for algae growth. But the warranty coverage differs significantly.
GAF offers StainGuard Plus with a 25-year algae protection warranty — the longest standard coverage of the Big Three. Their newer products even offer StainGuard Plus PRO with 30-year coverage.
Owens Corning's StreakGuard provides 10-year algae protection on standard products, upgradeable to 25 years through their certified contractor warranty programs.
CertainTeed's StreakFighter also covers 10-15 years depending on the specific product line.
Our take: In Texas and the Gulf states where humidity is high, GAF's 25-year standard algae warranty is a genuine advantage. You don't need to upgrade or jump through hoops to get it — it comes standard on Timberline HDZ. That said, if your home is in a drier area like parts of Arizona, algae is less of a concern and this difference matters less.
Installation Technology: What Your Crew Cares About
This is a category most homeowners skip, but it might be the most important. A perfectly manufactured shingle installed poorly will fail faster than an average shingle installed well. Each brand has taken a different approach to making installation more foolproof.
GAF's LayerLock Technology mechanically bonds overlapping shingle layers and creates a wider nailing zone (the StrikeZone). This makes it easier for installers to hit the sweet spot consistently. Faster, more accurate nailing means a tighter roof.
Owens Corning's SureNail Technology is arguably the most significant engineering innovation of the three. It's a woven fabric strip embedded in the nailing zone that provides a triple layer of reinforcement. The result: dramatically better nail pull-through resistance and a visible confirmation that nails are in the right spot. Crews can literally see the strip, which reduces guesswork.
CertainTeed's NailTrak is a more traditional approach — painted alignment markers that guide nail placement. Simpler, but effective. The heavier shingle weight also means less movement during installation on windy days, which can actually improve installation quality.
Our take: This is where your roofing contractor's opinion matters more than ours. Different crews prefer different products based on years of muscle memory. A crew that's installed 500 GAF roofs will do better work with GAF than with an unfamiliar product. When evaluating contractors, ask what they install most — that's usually what they install best.
Colors and Curb Appeal
Your roof is roughly 40% of your home's visible exterior from the street. Color matters more than most people expect.
CertainTeed wins this category decisively. They offer 21+ colors in their standard Landmark line, with additional Max Def options that provide more vibrant, dimensional color blends. Their designer and luxury lines (Grand Manor, Presidential Shake, Highland Slate) are the broadest in the industry. If you want your roof to look like natural slate or cedar shake without the cost, CertainTeed has the most convincing options.
Owens Corning offers 30+ TruDefinition colors with what might be the best batch-to-batch consistency in the industry. This matters if you ever need to patch a section later — the replacement shingles are more likely to match. They also have the most distinctive color branding, with names and marketing that make it easy to visualize the end result.
GAF provides 16-22+ colors depending on the specific Timberline line. Solid selection, though not as extensive as the other two. Their Ultra HD line provides enhanced shadow lines for a more dimensional look.
Our take: If you're going with a standard charcoal, weathered wood, or slate grey — which covers about 70% of what we install — all three look great and you won't notice a meaningful difference. If you want something specific, unique, or high-end looking, CertainTeed gives you the most options to choose from.
Warranties: What Actually Gets Covered
All three offer "lifetime" limited warranties, but "lifetime" in the roofing industry doesn't mean what you think. In all three cases, "lifetime" means as long as the original homeowner owns the house. Sell it, and the warranty coverage changes (though all three offer limited transferability).
More importantly, all three warranties shift from non-prorated to prorated coverage after a certain period. During the non-prorated period, the manufacturer covers the full cost of defective materials and often labor. After that, they cover a declining percentage based on how long you've had the roof.
GAF's standard non-prorated period is 10 years with their basic warranty, jumping to 50 years with their enhanced warranties (System Plus, Silver Pledge, Golden Pledge). The Golden Pledge — their best — includes 25-year workmanship coverage, but requires installation by a Master Elite contractor (less than 3% of roofers nationally).
Owens Corning's Platinum Preferred warranty offers lifetime workmanship coverage through their Platinum Preferred contractors. That's the strongest workmanship warranty of the three.
CertainTeed offers a 50-year non-prorated period on materials through their 5-Star warranty program with certified contractors.
Our take: The warranty is only as good as the company's willingness to honor it and the contractor who installed the roof. A premium warranty with a fly-by-night installer is worth nothing. A basic warranty with a contractor who does excellent work and uses the full system of accessories is worth a lot. Focus on the installer first, the warranty second.
What You'll Actually Pay
Pricing for standard architectural shingles from all three brands falls in a fairly tight range. At the standard tier: GAF Timberline HDZ runs roughly $4.50-$6.50 per square foot installed. Owens Corning Duration comes in at about $4.75-$6.75 per square foot. CertainTeed Landmark starts slightly higher at $5.00-$7.00 per square foot.
On a typical 2,000 sqft roof, that price difference between the least and most expensive option is roughly $500-$1,000. Not nothing, but not the deciding factor for most people. Your contractor's labor rate, your roof's pitch and complexity, and your geographic market will each have a bigger impact on the final number than which of these three brands you choose.
The price gap widens significantly at the premium and luxury tiers. CertainTeed's Grand Manor can run $8-$11 per square foot installed, while GAF and Owens Corning top out around $7-$9 per square foot for their premium lines. If you're going luxury, CertainTeed is the premium play.
So Which One Should You Choose?
Here's the honest answer: any of the Big Three will serve you well. The differences are real but relatively small at the standard architectural tier. That said, if I had to give recommendations based on priorities:
Choose GAF Timberline HDZ if you're in a wind-prone or humid area and want the strongest standard algae protection. The WindProven unlimited wind warranty is unique in the industry, and the 25-year algae coverage is the best out-of-the-box option. It's also the most widely available and the most price-competitive.
Choose Owens Corning Duration if installation security is your priority. SureNail Technology is genuinely innovative, and their color consistency is best-in-class. If your contractor is Platinum Preferred, the lifetime workmanship warranty is also the strongest available.
Choose CertainTeed Landmark if aesthetics matter most to you, or if you're considering a premium or luxury shingle. Their color range and designer lines are unmatched. The heavier weight also gives a slight durability edge in extreme weather.
But here's what matters more than any of this: hire a good contractor. The best shingle on earth, installed poorly, will fail in five years. An average shingle, installed correctly with proper ventilation, underlayment, and flashing, will protect your home for decades. When you get your quote from us, we'll recommend the right product for your specific roof, climate, and budget — not just the one with the biggest margin.
